Andrew has won the 2008 Literature in Africa photo competition, part of the eighth International Literature Festival in Berlin. His photograph, Bookmark, was selected from 438 submissions from 80 photographers worldwide.
The picture was taken on a Sunday afternoon when he and his family went for a stroll in the Company’s Gardens. His partner had noticed the man sitting on a bench reading.
“The leaf bookmark stood out like a lighthouse. I shot a few frames with a long lens so I wouldn’t disturb him and moved on,” he said. The picture was published in the Weekend Argus.
Cape Argus editor-in-chief Chris Whitfield said: “Andrew is an outstanding photographer and the award is a testimony to his keen eye for detail and skill as a photojournalist.”
Fujifilm National press awards:
Andrew got two pictures chosen as judges selection in the 2008 Fujifilm press awards. The portrait of Professor Russel Botman was made for the Cape Times series called “Racism and the City” and the mountain bikers during the Cape Epic was made for the Cape Argus.
